About us
In language, Baba means “father”, and our restaurant location at 424 Smith Street in Providence is grandfathered back to 1927 when the “Original New York System” opened at this address. The current owners, the Toprak family, are looking to carry on the same tradition that was developed way back almost 100 years ago. That tradition includes the same values, hospitality, service, quality, decor and reasonable price that the Pappas family started when they originally opened, and which our patrons expect.
Upon entering Baba’s Original New York System, you will reminisce back to when you and your family may have first visited, with the original style and decor intact from its beginnings (though we have updated equipment and comforts). You may even find a postcard that you or a relative had sent, or see pictures of the family that first served you.
While the Original New York System is well known for its (“All The Way”) Weiners and Coffee Milk, there was a need to expand the menu based on local neighborhood tastes and eating habits. Babas now has a larger menu with a variety of burger choices, veggie options, shakes, salads, wraps, gyros and sandwiches. Everything is made to order. We have recently added Spanish menu choices including Burritos, Tacos and Nachos, along with a Greek Souvlaki menu.
The Toprak family welcomes all with open arms, whether your first visit or those that have visited since opening in 1927. Stop in and find out for yourself how we have survived for almost 100 years. We are open daily 12 months per year for dine-in or take-out. Kids menu available. Late night hours. Catering is available. For faster service, call in your order for pick-up. Cash, credit and debit cards are accepted.
Stop in today and be welcomed by the Toprak family and their staff.
